What the BLM is proposing

The proposed action is for the Bureau of Land Management Ukiah Field Office to authorize the Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF) to perform continued maintenance on an existing airplane landing strip and install an informational kiosk on BLM managed lands within the Indian Valley Management Area of Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. Ground disturbance will be limited to installation of the kiosk/informational panel. The kiosk will be set with two 3-inch by 3-inch posts. The holes for the posts will be excavated approximately 40 inches deep by 6 inches diameter. Posts will be set using a combination of cement and native soil. Maintenance will be performed using hand tools to trim brush that has encroached on the landing surface as well as provide safe clearance for aircraft wing tips within a 10-foot buffer of either edge of the airstrip. Vegetation will be hedged and not trimmed to the ground and only cleared to the height necessary to allow for safe passage of aircraft wing tips. The airstrip will not be widened to more than 70 feet across bare ground landing surface and no more than 1800 feet in length. Exempt activity as defined in the 2019 California BLM State Protocol Agreement (Date: 10/09/2026).
